I Gain From What I Give

November’s mantra, “I gain from what I give. Not in sum or quantities. But in space and time”, feels appropriate for a month in which many of us gather with family and friends to express thanks for all that we have. It’s also the time of the year, more than any other, that reminds me of the many blessings in my life, blessings so many others do not have. It is a season in which my city is bedecked in lights. Yet it is also the time of the year when the Salvation Army are on many streets with their can and the ringing of bells to encourage to give whatever it is we have to help those in our world who need more than the illumination of those twinkly lights.

While the holiday season is meant to be a time of joy, it can be challenging for many of us, this writer included. Perhaps it is the pressure of what the holidays are meant to represent. Yet like so much in life, the reality is lacking in the depth and purpose that might provide a different sheen to the many celebrations we are told we should enjoy. It is also a time when we are more reflective about the year that has been as we look to the year ahead. Whatever the cause for the ennui that some of us suffer during this season, the one solution I have found to stave off the absurd self-pity I allow myself to wallow is by giving. Giving without thought. Giving without preconditions. Giving without expectations. Giving for the share act of giving.

What I have discovered is the more I give with abandon of what is more precious to me than simply writing a check, the more I am able to connect the true meaning of this season. So, as this mantra’s says, give whatever it is you are able.
